Similar genera

Bangia (solid cylinder of cells); Smithora (Pacific Northwest of North America only), Porphyropsis, Erythropeltis (small blades, no or few basal rhizoids, no conchocelis). Several other red algal genera (different ones in different locales) may superficially resemble Porphyra blades, but all of these will have multiple layers of cells that are tied together by pit connections.
