Malawimonas is a new genus and species, of uncertain taxonomic placement within the eukaryotes. If the "jakobid hypothesis" is correct (see Introduction), then Malawimonas is one of the most ancient of the eukaryotes in the lineage with discoidal mitochondrial cristae. Until this hypothesis can be adequately tested, the genus is placed in its own family, and that family placed sedis mutabilis ("position subject to change") among the protists. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is the applicable code.
