Taxonomy :

Protista, Rhizopoda, Lobosea, Amoebida, Acanthamoebidae, Acanthamoeba castellanii

Phenotype :

Trophic amoeba with characteristic fine-tipped pseudopods (acanthapods) projecting from the organism. (See FL Schuster: Handbook of Protoctista)

Ecology :

Free-living soil amoeba. Several species of this order cause an insidious disease of the central nervous system (encephalomyelitis).

Ultrastructure :

Mitochondria are of the tubular cristae type.
