Shape: circle means 'circular mapping', i.e. in reality it might be (even most likely is) a linear
concatemer and not a true circle. In S. punctatus, only a minor fraction of the small chromosomes
exists as supercoiled monomeric circles.
PCR partial sequence obtain by PCR amplification
* random sequence, no completion planned
** two 4 kbp long Hind III fragments were completely sequenced
*** 3 'chromosomes' of 58.8, 1.4 and 1.1 kbp
# sequencing not performed by FMGP, 86% are published, 8% unpublished data (TA Brown);
the sequence might be completed by FMGP
In phylogenetic analyses using nuclear
or mitochondrial sequences, the oomycete P.infestans clearly branches
with the Stramenopila (golden, brown, diatom algae etc.). Using nuclear
small subunit ribosomal sequences, several choanoflagellates have been postulated
as an early branch within the animal lineage (Sogin et al.). Our analysis
with Monosiga mitochondrial sequences shows clearly that it diverges
from a common ancestor of the fungi/animals, rather than within the animal
clade.
