Eufungal, Oomycete and Choanoflagellate mitochondrial genomes sequenced by FMGP

Status as of August 4, 2002.

In phylogenetic analyses using nuclear or mitochondrial sequences, the oomycete P.infestans clearly branches with the Stramenopila (golden, brown, diatom algae etc.). Using nuclear small subunit ribosomal sequences, several choanoflagellates have been postulated as an early branch within the animal lineage (Sogin et al.). Our analysis with Monosiga mitochondrial sequences shows clearly that it diverges from a common ancestor of the fungi/animals, rather than within the animal clade.
