The Robert-Cedergren Centre in Bioinformatics and Genomics is an interdisciplinary
research initiative housed at the Universite de Montreal, Quebec. We are
currently seeking a Linux system administrator to provide support in daily
software and hardware maintenance.
The applicant must be able to demonstrate relevant experience in system
support and maintenance, and familiarity with the Linux operating system.
LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR - PART TIME
Job Description:
Administrate a network of ~20 Linux workstations and specialized file servers, computational
servers, a database server secured by a firewall, a few laptop computers, and virtual
machines running Windows under Linux.
Administration tasks involve:
- Manage user accounts
- Perform regular backups and data recoveries
- Install, maintain and upgrade software
- Install, configure and maintain hardware, diagnose failure, organize repair
- Implement network security procedures
- Monitor and tune the system
- Provide support for Windows installations (VirtualBox) and web servers
- Provide end-user support
- Contribute to software debugging
Requirements:
- Diploma in Computer Science Technology (DEC technique/technical post-secondary School Diploma) or
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, Life Science, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics
- 3+ years of work experience in Linux (Mandriva) system administration, in particular:
SSH, TCP/IP, FTP, NFS, Network printing, sendmail, imapd, Apache, and CVS
- Software and hardware debugging and troubleshooting skills
- Programming experience in any of the following languages: Bash, Perl, Python
- Good communication skills
Appreciated Skills:
- HTML, PHP, Java, C programming
- Familiarity with relational database management system
- Expertise with bioinformatics software for high-throughput data analysis.
Starting date: immediately. In the case of equivalent qualification,
preference will be given to applicants with Canadian citizenship or permanent
residence.
